Cosmelan® Pigmentation Treatment at Maldon Skin Clinic
It's time to take control of your pigmentation.
Dark patches that keep returning? Uneven pigmentation after pregnancy? Stubborn marks left behind after breakouts? Melasma that seems impossible to shift? Pigmentation can be one of the most frustrating skin concerns to treat particularly when it improves temporarily, only to return again.
Introducing Cosmelan® at Maldon Skin Clinic an advanced professional depigmentation programme specifically designed to target stubborn pigmentation while helping to regulate the processes responsible for excess pigment production.
Rather than simply exfoliating the surface of the skin, Cosmelan combines an in clinic treatment with a carefully prescribed homecare programme to create a longer term approach to pigmentation management. The goal? Brighter. Clearer. More even looking skin.
What is Cosmelan®?
Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation treatment from mesoestetic®, developed specifically for hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Our skin produces a pigment called melanin, which gives skin its colour. When melanin production becomes irregular or excessive, pigment can accumulate in certain areas resulting in patches, marks and uneven skin tone.
Cosmelan takes a multi stage approach to pigmentation. The programme begins with a professional treatment performed in clinic and continues at home with a specific skincare protocol designed to help manage pigmentation and reduce the likelihood of it quickly reappearing. This combination is what makes Cosmelan very different from simply booking a brightening facial or superficial peel.
What can Cosmelan treat?
Cosmelan may be suitable for a number of pigmentation concerns, including:
- Melasma
- Sun-induced pigmentation
- Dark patches
- Uneven skin tone
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Pigmentation left behind following spots or breakouts
- Hormonal pigmentation
- Areas of stubborn discolouration
- Dull, uneven looking skin
During your consultation we’ll assess your pigmentation carefully before deciding whether Cosmelan is the most appropriate treatment.
Cosmelan for melasma
If you’ve experienced melasma, you’ll probably already know how frustrating it can be. Melasma typically appears as irregular brown or grey brown patches, commonly across areas such as the forehead, cheeks, upper lip and chin. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, sun exposure and other factors can influence its appearance, and pigmentation may improve before becoming visible again. This is why we don’t like to describe melasma as something that can simply be permanently “removed”. Instead, it needs to be managed.
Cosmelan is particularly well known for its approach to melasma because the programme doesn’t focus solely on removing visible surface pigment. It also incorporates ongoing homecare designed to help regulate pigmentation and maintain the result.
How does Cosmelan work?
Cosmelan works through a combination of professional depigmenting ingredients and ongoing pigment regulation.
The treatment helps reduce the appearance of existing pigmentation while targeting the pathways involved in melanin production.
Your initial professional treatment begins the depigmentation process, while your prescribed homecare becomes an essential part of maintaining and progressing your result. This is why we describe Cosmelan as a programme rather than a one off peel. Your commitment at home is just as important as what we do for you in clinic.
Cosmelan® Pigmentation Treatment FAQs
Your Cosmelan journey begins with a thorough skin consultation. We’ll assess your pigmentation, skin type, current skincare, medical history and previous treatments to establish whether Cosmelan is suitable for you. If we proceed, your skin will be professionally prepared before the Cosmelan mask is applied in clinic.
And this is where Cosmelan is a little different…
You’ll leave Maldon Skin Clinic wearing the mask. Your practitioner will tell you exactly how long it needs to remain on your skin according to your individual treatment protocol. You’ll then remove the mask yourself at home at the instructed time and begin your prescribed aftercare programme. Don’t worry we’ll explain everything thoroughly before you leave! The homecare is part of the treatment
This bit is really important. Cosmelan isn’t a treatment where you have the mask applied and then forget about it. Your homecare protocol is an essential part of your Cosmelan programme. You’ll be given clear instructions explaining which products to use, when to use them and how your routine will change as your skin progresses through the programme. Following this correctly helps us achieve the best possible improvement while supporting your skin throughout the process.
If you’re considering Cosmelan, you therefore need to be prepared to commit to the homecare too.
Cosmelan is an intensive treatment, so downtime should be expected. Following treatment, the skin may become:
- Red.
- Dry.
- Tight.
- Sensitive.
- Flaky or peeling.
The level of visible peeling varies between individuals. Your skin may also feel more sensitive than usual while it adjusts to the programme. This is why we’ll provide detailed aftercare and explain what is normal, what products you should be using and when you should contact us.
Cosmelan is a progressive programme. As treatment progresses, clients may begin to notice pigmentation appearing lighter and the overall complexion looking brighter, clearer and more even. However, pigmentation is complex and results vary depending on the type, depth and cause of the pigmentation, alongside factors such as sun exposure, hormones and adherence to the prescribed homecare.
For conditions such as melasma in particular, our focus is not simply on achieving an initial improvement. It’s on managing the pigmentation long term.
This is one of the most important things to understand before treating pigmentation.
Removing visible pigment doesn’t necessarily remove the reason your skin produced it. UV exposure, visible light, hormonal influences, inflammation and other triggers can all contribute to pigmentation becoming more noticeable again. That’s why daily sun protection and ongoing pigment management are non negotiable.
Think of pigmentation as something we control rather than something we erase once and never think about again.
One of the reasons Cosmelan has become such a well known professional depigmentation programme is its suitability across a broad range of skin phototypes.
However, that doesn’t mean every pigmentation concern should automatically be treated. Every Cosmelan client at Maldon Skin Clinic will therefore undergo a professional consultation before treatment.
We offer advanced laser and skin technologies at Maldon Skin Clinic, but not every pigmentation concern should be treated in exactly the same way. Certain types of pigmentation may respond beautifully to laser or IPL. Others, particularly melasma – require a very different approach, as heat and inappropriate treatment can potentially aggravate the condition. This is why we assess the pigmentation first rather than simply allowing you to choose a treatment from a menu.
Depending on what we see, we may recommend Cosmelan, laser/IPL, professional skincare or another treatment plan entirely. Our priority is choosing the right treatment for the pigmentation you actually have.
No. Although Cosmelan has an exfoliating and resurfacing effect, describing it simply as a “peel” doesn’t really explain what makes the programme different. Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation method combining an intensive in clinic phase with continued home treatment.
The objective isn’t simply to peel the skin. It’s to improve existing pigmentation while helping to regulate the processes involved in excess pigment production.
Cosmelan could be an excellent option if you look in the mirror and feel that pigmentation is dominating your complexion. Perhaps you’ve covered melasma with foundation for years. Maybe pigmentation appeared during pregnancy and never completely disappeared. Perhaps you’ve accumulated sun damage over time. Or maybe every breakout leaves behind a dark mark that seems to stay far longer than the spot itself.
Whatever the reason, the first step is finding out what type of pigmentation we’re actually dealing with.
