Cryotherapy FAQ
There is little to no pain involved in Cryotherapy. Most patients experience some light tingling with the initial freezing, but also describe an anaesthetic effect from the freezing temperatures. When the area thaws out, there may be a slight pinching sensation followed by a minor discomfort the following day. We recommend pain-relief medication such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to alleviate this.
Due to the safe and efficient nature of this treatment, there should be the least amount of scarring of any form of lesion removal as it causes the least damage to the connective tissue.
Directly following the treatment, the area of treated skin will appear lighter than the surrounding skin. This will darken over time. Light swelling and redness are also common, but this will settle after a few days.
When the area thaws out, there may be a slight pinching sensation followed by a minor discomfort the following day. We recommend pain-relief medication such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to alleviate this.
Freeze time will vary depending on the type of lesion. A typical freeze time is between 5 seconds for small flat warts to 120 seconds for a large full thickness lesion. For general purpose, most lesions take around 30 seconds.
Cryotherapy is suitable for all adult individuals who are looking to treat skin lesions such as verrucas, skin tags, moles, warts and many more.
This treatment is inadvisable for certain lesions, such as undiagnosed lesions, melanoma or any conditions exacerbated by cold exposure.
For most conditions, this treatment is a permanent removal that will have results the instant you leave our Clinic.
Some conditions are harder to remove than others, and in delicate areas a shorter freeze time with repeat procedures may be required to achieve a final result with the least damage to surrounding skin. In other cases, where the condition is deep (such as stubborn warts or verrucas), several aggressive treatments may be required to achieve total removal.
Once the removal is successful, we recommend the following advice for looking after your skin to prevent further formation of skin lesions.
- Maintain a healthy skincare routine
- Minimise exposure to UV radiation
- Eating a balanced diet and maintain hydration
- Avoid any stress that accelerates the signs of ageing
- Follow the given aftercare
- Attend future appointments if needed
Cryotherapy can be used to treat unwanted skin lesions such:

- Moles
- Skin tags
- Verrucas
- Pigmentation issues

How does Cryotherapy work?
Cryotherapy can treat unwanted skin lesions such as warts, moles, skin tags and verrucas.
It works by safely breaking down the tissue cells by rapidly bringing them down to a low temperature, where they form ice crystals. The most common freezing agent is liquid nitrogen. The ice crystals break down the structure of the cell, allowing water to fill the surrounding area and creating a blister.
Healing of the blister will then occur within two to six weeks depending on the depth of the freeze, providing an efficient removal with the least amount of scarring compared to other alternative methods.
